Conservation Commission Meeting

  • Approve Minutes of October 6, 2010
The group approved the minutes of October 6th, 2010.

Old Business

  • Report on Presentation to Selectmen.
    
     A letter requesting the Town change to organic land care on the town parks was presented to the Selectmen at their October 18th, 2010 meeting.  Selectmen agreed to take the request under advisement and seek  additional information regarding current organic treatments to town fields in other towns.  

  • Report on discussion with Superintendent of Schools.
                
                GJames visited with Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Osga who agreed that the town parks should  be       
              treated organically.  The Commission wrote a letter to every Board of Ed member requesting that they write a letter to the Selectmen about switching to organic treatment of the  town fields .  The Commission will deliver the BOE letter within the coming     week.  Some suggestions were made with respect to information to be included in the BOE letter.
  • Roger’s Lake -- weed
    It was stated that a new weed, fanwort, has been discovered in Rogers Lake, and will be treated right away hopefully without resorting to herbicides..

  • Bicycle Route
The     Commission is seeking out avid cyclists to aid in rerouting the trail off Rte 156 North for safety reasons as well as generally improve safe use of bicycles in town..  
Budget Proposal

                The budget proposal for next year has been submitted.



  • Open Space Commission Report
    
GJames  stated that he sent an email to Attorney Ed Cassella expressing several concerns about the proposed document governing the open space commission..  Member McCulloch provided a copy of a memorandum addressing the current State statute regarding land acquisition and management of open space.  .  This is still awaiting a response from Attorney Cassella.

  • POCD status
                
                Mr. Harold Thompson, chairman of the Planning Commission, has available a draft copy of the Plan of Conservation and Development 2010-2020. Many of the Commission’s recommendations are included in the document.


New Business

  • Proposed New Members for Commission.
    GJames stated there is possibility for new members from other town commissions, and possibly previous members.  Also, for the coming year, there is the chance that the meeting night may have to be changed to accommodate new members.  The membership letter will be reviewed by GJames and possibly include a paragraph about the history of the Conservation Commission.  Current members may want to bring a list of possible contacts for membership in 2011.

  • Solar Options for Businesses
                Commission is to seek out funding information for businesses and provide such information                     through the use of local press, and possibly a talk/discussion for members and residents.

c. Ross ordu=inance
    Mr. Ross has submitted a proposal requesting an ordinance requiring a town policy that Old Lyme retain its water resources within its borders and not ship it elsewhere as is being done in neighboring towns..  Motion was made to accept this proposal.  Commission unanimously accepted.

  • Video showing
       
                Copies of flyers for promotion around town were presented to members.  And a copy will be                     sent to Dr. Jerry Silbert, guest speaker for “A Chemical Reaction”, on Tuesday, November 16th.                  GJames will introduce the film, DMcCulloch will introduce Dr. Silbert, of Watershed Partnership, Inc.
